Preparing for Pregnancy

couple pregnancy

Focusing on nutritional support and awareness of environmental toxins pre-pregnancy.

To start, couples wanting to conceive should begin preparing minimally three months prior to trying. Couples needing to make major lifestyle changes may  want to begin preparing about a year in advance.

Low sperm production, poor sperm motility and abnormal morphology are the most common causes of infertility in men.  Male-factor infertility is involved in approximately 30% of infertility cases.

Before and during trying to conceive,  men should eat a nutrient dense diet including adequate zinc, selenium, vitamins A,C,D & E, folate and omega-3 fatty acids. Some food options include fish and shellfish, seaweed, eggs, grass-fed full-fat dairy, organic beef, organ meats, nuts, beans and lentils, citrus, kiwi, bell pepper, leafy greens, asparagus, beets, brussels sprouts, broccoli and avocado.

For women, the most common impediment to pregnancy is dysfunctional ovulation.  The reason many women under 35 have ovulatory infertility is PCOS.

Naturopathic Medicine focuses on empowering lifestyle changes that you can learn and use into adult life. This is the cornerstone of PCOS treatment.  We create a treatment protocol with nutraceuticals, dietary changes and exercise to manage PCOS.

Some good news for those with PCOS. Losing weight improves your ovulation rate if you are overweight or obese with infertility due to PCOS. It also improves your chances of a full term pregnancy and live birth.

It is also estimated that half of American women have insufficient iodine intake, which is needed for thyroid hormone production. Women deficient in iodine are half as likely to conceive in a cycle.

Endocrine-disruption chemicals (EDCs) can also affect fertility in both women and men.  These substances are everywhere but it is possible to limit exposure to them.  EDCs include PCBs found in industrial solvents or lubricants; phthalates found in everything from food and drink containers to vinyl flooring, detergent, nail polish and perfume. Another EDC ,bisphenol A or BPA although no longer allowed to be used for baby bottles and cups is still used in food and beverage containers. Finally, parabens found in many cosmetics, skincare products, shampoos and conditioners.
