Science is spicing up GI health.
Chili powder was found to have an affect on the pathogenesis of abdominal pain in functional dyspepsia and cause other symptoms, but may paly a therapuetic role in functional gastrointestinal disorders or FGIDs through desensitization of transient receptor potential vanilloid- 1 receptor.
FGIDs are disorders that characterize themselves by persistent and recurring GI symptoms.
Curcumin which is a component of turmeric has also shown positive effects on gut inflammation, gut permeability and the brain-gut axis, especially in FGIDs.
Prebiotics can also selectively stimulate growth and/or activity of certain colonic bacteria. It could lead to the reduction of production of toxins and suppress growth of harmful disease-causing enteric pathogens.
However, they do have the potential to cause bloating due to bacterial fermentation.
