Polychlorinated biphenyls also known as PCBs are highly carcinogenic chemical compounds.
PCB's were originally manufactured in the 1920's and utilized until being banned in the United States by Toxic Substances Control Act in 1979 and internationally by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2001.
They pose serious health risks to fetuses, babies and children, who may suffer developmental and neurological problems from prolonged or repeated exposure to small amounts of PCBs. PCBs have been found to be as bad as lead causing cognitive impairment and affecting children during key stages of development.
While it was in the works that the toxic chemical be banned, Monsanto mixed their supply into window caulking and then sold it to schools across the country. The PCBs are activated by warmth and travel into the air leading to the harmful chemical to be inhaled by children in schools where this is still found in materials.
"Children are experiencing serious neuro-behavioral effects and will be at risk for chronic diseases as they grow older due to the chemicals being found in the air and on surfaces at their schools. PCBs have been added to construction materials which react with heat, causing the chemicals to mobilize in the air and be inhaled. Unfortunately, schools are a major source of exposure for children, as PCBs are found in window caulking and fluorescent lightbulbs." (NAEM, 2022)
