The Gut and Childhood Allergy Conditions

An imbalance in your infants gut could lead to the development of major childhood allergies.

Allergies, like so many other conditions, are linked to gut health and the gut microbiome. Four major allergies share a common feature: imbalance of gut bacteria during infancy.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the BC Children’s Hospital, Canada, looked at the role that gut bacteria and early-life influences played in developing four major childhood allergies: eczema, asthma, food allergy and hay fever.

Because these are different diagnoses, they are typically studied individually, but after comparing then at a cellular level the researchers discovered they have a lot in common.

Stool samples collected in the study revealed a common bacterial "signature" in children who had developed one of these four conditions by the age of 5.  This indicated an imbalanced gut microbiota or dysbiosis/

The researchers took a deeper look into whether or not factors such as antibiotic use or breast feeding impacted the microbiota in the children and if they developed allergies.

The data showed that heavy antibiotic usage negatively impacted the gut microbiota and that breast feeding was preventative in gut microbiota imbalances.

It’s hoped that the study’s findings will inform treatments to correct gut dysbiosis, potentially preventing allergies from developing.
