Turmeric for Seizures

We know turmeric as an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and now an anti-seizure herb.

Curcuma longa or Turmeric is a root traditionally used as a coloring agent and spice for stomach-warming curries. It is recognized as a medicinal herb and in the same family as ginger. Used as an anti-inflammatory agent, Turmeric is used to fight cancer, respiratory infections and gastrointestinal conditions.

Second Nature Care patients take it in formulas to treat arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, gastric ulcers, psoriasis, cognition issues and several cancers including: breast, colorectal, pancreatic, lung and prostate. If you look Turmeric up on PubMed you'll find more than 7000 citations.

I only recommend specific formulas with curcumin from Xymogen because it is poorly absorbed unless it is paired with black pepper to increase bioavailability.  It is of low-molecular weight and lipophilic so it can cross the blood brain barrier.

There is talk and theory about Turmeric because of its neuroprotective and anti-oxidant properties; it might be good for the treatment of seizures.  Several animal studies have shown that turmeric did reduce chemically-induced seizures. The next step would be to study its use in patients with epilepsy.

For those with an ear and eye for genomics - preliminary research showed that curcumin inhibited cytochrome P450 (CYP)1A2 and enhanced CYP2A6.
