Ever wonder what might be causing constipation? Well a lot of things like foods, medicines, etc., but a recent study found that there is a link between constipation and the herpes infection.
Herpes is typically thought of and characterized by painful lesions but this virus can also cause constipation.
This not only expands the research on herpes, but may help patients who have no clear understanding on the cause of their gastrointestinal related issues and diseases.
People with herpes have reported in the past symptoms such as: constipation and urinary retention and there was no understood mechanism. The herpes simplex virus-2, the number one cause of genital herpes in the United States, was investigated in mice. The researchers found that the herpes virus spread from the genitals to nerves in the spinal cord and then onto neurons in the colon, killing them.
The damaged colonic neurons prevented the movement of food along the digestive tract which led to an enlarged colon and diseases. The study found a previously unrecognized pathway of disease. Other members of the herpes family such as Epstein-Barr virus, chicken pox virus. and cytomegalovirus have been found within the neurons of the colon in people suffering with chronic constipation. If a doctor cannot find the root cause of the constipation they may want to look at this infection.
