New research is showing that "prolonged immunologic stress" is a risk factor for OCD. What causes prolonged immunologic stress and what does it do to your immune system?

Prolonged immunologic stress can be caused by viruses and other pathogens that cross the blood-brain-barrier or BBB.

The blood-brain-barrier gets compromised and allows foreign antibodies into our central nervous system where these antibodies cross-react with normal basal ganglia neurons. This causes neuro-inflammation. It disrupts your brain circuits and can generate OCD symptoms. Usually, strep infections are to cause, but now we know that other viruses like Rheumatic fever, Herpes 1, Epstein-Barr, Parvo, Toxoplasmosis, Lyme and others can trigger a brain autoimmune process.

Compulsive symptoms in children showed up following a streptococcal infection. PANDAS is the sequellae that follows a strep infection and stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections.

More than 80% of children with Sydenham's chorea have obsessions and compulsions. Children with OCD are more likely to be male and have Tourette's syndrome.

Adults with OCD have immune system alterations. They have increased cortisol production. Antistreptococcal antibody levels correlate to the severity of symptoms. We test your ASO or antistreptolysin O antibody titers, viral loads, heavy metals, autoimmune markers, toxic mold markers, advanced immune panels at Second Nature. We repeat the titers after 3 -4 weeks after treatment to monitor progress. We offer treatment to resolve acute and chronic strep infections. Our Empire City Lab professionals come to your office or home for your blood draw and there is no balance billing if they accept your insurance. That means your comprehensive labs are free and you do not see a bill. Or if you prefer, you can go to a designated draw station.

People with OCD, Anxiety disorders and Dysthmia can have allergic syndromes because they have IgA deficiencies. They might have recurrent sinus infections, chronic bronchitis, acute pneumonia, asthma, celiac, ulcerative colitis, gastrointestinal tract infections and enteritis. They might also have Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus or SLE and hemolytic anemia. These individuals are IgA deficient and asymptomatic. About 50% present with a history of recurrent respiratory tract infections, acute diarrhea and or bronchitis. I check for IgA deficiencies with most patients because they don't present with symptoms.

Second Nature patients rebuild their immune systems with purified IgG and IgA immunoglobulins orally. We give I.V. ozone therapies to kill smoldering or acute infectious agents. Both give striking improvements with treating OCD.

Other labs that we check for with patients with OCD are: CD8 T-suppressor cells and CD4 cells. CD8 cells usually increase while CD4 cells decrease in OCD. Decreased CD4 cells have also been observed in the autistic population.

People with OCD have had increased cerebral spinal fluid levels of immunoglobulin G antibodies against herpes virus I.
