The adoption of oxygen ozone therapy to treat patients severely affected by Covid, as a medical practice to be used for compassionate use, has become the subject of public debate in Spain.
IN COMO, OXYGEN OZONE THERAPY SAVES THE LIFE OF A COVID-SICK LADY
The doctors of the Covid department of the Valduce Hospital in Como, Italy, had used all the means and therapies available to them. The situation was desperate. For the 63-year-old Mrs. Maria Ausilia, called “Usi”, there seemed to be little chance of recovery. The former husband chartered accountant Francesco Nessi together with the doctors prof. Marianno Franzini, International President of the Scientific Society of Oxygen/Ozone Therapy (SIOOT), and the surgeon Emanuele Franchi were ready for one last therapeutic attempt with oxygen/ozone therapy.
Dr. Franchi is an orthopedics and traumatology specialist, current Head of the Orthopedics Unit of the Clinical Institute of Villa Aprica in Como, a member of SIOOT, who has been practicing ozone therapy since 2006.
Interviewed by “Orbisphera”, Dr. Franchi said:
«The SIOOT and prof. Franzini were contacted by dr. Nessi, desperate for the condition of his ex-wife, who after more than two weeks of intensive care intubated and subsequently transferred to the pulmonology ward where she was supported with non-invasive ventilation 24 hours a day, did not seem to improve despite the various therapies reserved for her. Dr. Nessi was determined to try one last therapy for his wife, so he asked the hospital managers to be able to practice oxygen-ozone therapy under conditions of compassionate protocol. Once he became aware of the lady’s conditions and made an agreement with the hospital for the practice of this therapy, prof. Franzini involved me as an ozone therapist who carries out his own business in Como.
Having dealt with the necessary paperwork, I entered the department on the morning of Saturday 10 April.
The patient was in very serious condition, with the ratio between ventilation perfusion and oxygenation the so-called (P/F) equal to 90. A very low value considered as a critical limit for intubation.
After the interview with the patient’s colleagues, it was immediately clear to me that despite the therapies used up to that time and the long resuscitation treatment, the patient’s clinical condition did not improve and, after a careful evaluation, it was considered unlikely that the physique of the lady already strongly weakened could withstand other invasive treatments such as resuscitation maneuvers.
As foreseen by the protocol studied with prof. Franzini, we therefore started with the first major autohemotherapy (MAH), which was then repeated in the evening. Oviously, during the whole period in which we practiced oxygen-ozone therapy, none of the original therapies in progress were suspended.
The surprising thing is that on Sunday morning, after just two MAH sessions, the ratio (P/F) between ventilation perfusion and oxygenation had already risen to 210. This was a sensational response.
In the following days the parameters of (P/F) stabilized between 270 and 300, an exceptional result if you consider that we started from 90.
Even knowing how effective MAH was, I was the first to be amazed at how sensational the effect of ozone therapy had been on the lady’s health conditions.
We continued with this treatment for four days.
In the following days, we witnessed a constant improvement in clinical and laboratory parameters.
The values of the C-reactive protein that measures inflammation fell from 150 to 40,
and the values of the D-dimer which measures the coagulation mechanisms related to the formation of thrombi fell from 1500 to 500.
After a few days of therapy and clinical improvement, a control CT scan of the chest was repeated which surprisingly showed a marked improvement in the pulmonary infiltrative foci.
We therefore decided to continue with the treatment once a day for about another week.
A few days after discontinuing the therapy, Dr. Nessi reported that his wife was fine and even managed to celebrate her birthday a few days after the end of the therapy with the staff by going out on the terrace of her hospital room.
I am an orthopedics specialist and I find it difficult to understand all the mechanisms of action of ozone, but by evaluating the clinical parameters that I am able to understand, I can say that the improvement seems surprising to me.
It is the first time that I have personally treated a Covid-19 patient with ozone therapy and it seems to me an example of remarkable success in the ability to cure.
The results are consistent and in line with what has been observed and published in the case reports and in the international bibliography in which 890 Covid-19 patients are successfully treated with the aid of oxygen-ozone therapy associated with standard therapies used in dedicated departments.
What amazed me most is that Covid-19 patients treated with oxygen ozone therapy in combination with conventional therapies reported in the literature, were subjected to protocols that provided for the use of this treatment developed for patients in less dire conditions.
This, in my opinion, suggests that if we had intervened at the first symptoms rather than when the picture was so impaired, the course of the lady’s illness might have been more favorable from the beginning.
After the oxygen ozone therapy, the patient tested negative for Covid-19, so it would be worth furthering the studies to understand if and to what extent this therapy, which is known to have antibacterial and antiviral properties, may have contributed to this result.
I am fascinated and favorably surprised by the behavior of ozone, even though I have long verified its anti-inflammatory and anti-infective capacity in patients I have treated with bacterial loads that could not be eradicated with normal drug treatment.
I was very confident in ozone’s ability to fight Covid, however I was amazed by the results that went far beyond my expectations.
Unfortunately, despite the results obtained in this and in other cases reported in the literature, to date an appropriate experimentation and evaluation process has not been developed that allows oxygen-ozone therapy to be recognized as an adjuvant to those known to all and used in the Covid-19 disease therapy more universally.
Reflecting on what happened in my limited experience and comparing myself with some fellow ozone therapists who have been involved in the treatment of other patients suffering from Covid-19 disease, I am convinced that it would be worth putting the effort into carrying out a comprehensive research aimed at “approval of oxygen-ozone therapy as a hospital protocol for the treatment of Covid-19 patients”. I also hope that other hospitals may consider in the interim the use of therapy as a compassionate cure for those cases for which the standard therapies recognized and used on a large scale have unfortunately not brought satisfactory results, in the hope that other patients can draw the benefit that I have been able to observe.
If further studies and the collection of other cases confirm the validity of oxygen-ozone therapy as an adjuvant to standard care, oxygen-ozone therapy could help save more lives and would also benefit hospitals dedicated to the care of Covid-19 positive patients, especially in terms of patient recovery speed».
It is also worth noting that all the interventions made by dr. Franchi for practicing oxygen ozone therapy were done completely free of charge.
The costs of using the machines and bags to carry out the MAH were also covered free of charge by SIOOT.
Concluded Dr. Franchi: «The compassionate protocol provides for free treatment and in any case my service aimed to heal the lady regardless of the costs».

Your interventions not only contributed to saving a person, and as the Talmud says “whoever saves a life saves the whole world”, and this action has fueled the hope of assisting in the best way the other therapies already recognized and proven to defeat Covid and other viruses to come.

This is the idea proposed in a study entitled “COVID-19 Ocular Prophylaxis: The Potential Role of Ozonated-Oils in Liposome Eyedrop Gel”, published in the August issue of Translational Vision Science & Technology:
The study was directed by Dr. Stanislao Rizzo, Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome campus, and Director of Ophthalmology of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital Foundation.
“The ozone-based ophthalmic gels – said prof. Rizzo – are already used to relieve the symptoms of inflammatory eye diseases, including those of infectious origin. Our study suggests that they may also have a barrier effect against viruses that enter the eye or nasolacrimal system”.
“This is an in vitro study and the results will have to be confirmed by studies on animal models and humans,” said Rizzo.

In a note, the IRCCS of the Gemelli Polyclinic explained that the SARS CoV-2 virus can also enter the body through the eyes.
In this regard, the study related what happened to a member of the US National Expert Panel on pneumonia, sent to Wuhan for inspection.
The man, who wore no eye protection, first developed conjunctivitis and then the classic Covid-19 pneumonia.
Other studies have shown that the virus can remain in the eye for several weeks after the acute phase of the disease.
It was therefore discovered that the eyes are a target organ of SARS CoV-2, and that especially those suffering from dry eye syndrome are much more likely to be infected. Yes which human tissue requires the most oxygen?
Answer: The Retina
Aging begins in the eyes. That is why you must give your eyes special attention. Get regular eye exams yearly and especially after you have Covid or the vaccine.
It was thus thought to enhance the barrier effect of tears against SARS CoV-2 by using a special ozone-based gel.
In the note from the IRCCS of Gemelli it is specified that “ozone has long been used in medicine to disinfect and treat infectious diseases, given its ability to inactivate bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts and even protozoa. The antiviral activity of ozone occurs by damaging the viral capsid and altering replication through peroxidation”.
When asked how to spread ozone on the surface of the eye, prof. Rizzo replied that “ozone is very unstable, but to make it suitable for topical use, it can be stabilized by making it react with a monounsaturated fatty acid such as oleic acid to create the so-called ozonated oils, which retain the same properties gaseous ozone and are well tolerated by the tissues.”
“Ozonated oils – he added – are already used in the form of eye drops or ophthalmic gels to relieve the symptoms of inflammatory ocular diseases, including those of infectious origin; ozone also facilitates the healing of corneal damage by minimizing the risk of scarring and opacification of the cornea.”
“The objective of the study – explains prof. Rizzo – is to evaluate whether this eye gel can prevent SARS CoV-2 infection in the tissues of the eye, and also to evaluate whether, in patients with dry eye syndrome, ozone can help restore the integrity of the ocular surface, repairing and regenerating the conjunctival microvilli.”
The in vitro study provided positive results, demonstrating that the ozone-based ophthalmic gel inhibited viral replication and the entry of the virus into the cells on the surface of the eye (corneal and conjunctival).
It has also been shown that ozone eye gel restores cell regeneration and controls inflammation in dry eye syndrome.
In conclusion, considering that the ocular surface is a potential route of entry for the virus, if the results of this research were to be confirmed by studies on animal models and on humans, it would be conceivable to propose the topical administration of ozone-based ophthalmic gels to prevent the entry of SARS CoV-2 through the ocular surface.
The Director of the Gemelli Ophthalmology Unit believes that the ozone gel is “a protective measure to be recommended first of all to health professionals, and then to be extended to the entire population.”

These are the conclusions of a study conducted by researchers from the Tel Aviv University School of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with the Materials Engineering Department of the Azrieli College of Engineering in Jerusalem and the Faculty of Medicine of the Bar Ilan University of Safed (Israel).
The scientific work, published on January 13, 2021 in
Environmental Chemistry Letters, therefore confirms that ozone is a safe and powerful disinfectant against the SARS-CoV-2 virus:
The researchers were able to experience that, thanks to the use of ozone, the viral infection was reduced by a percentage of about 95% after exposure to ozone for 20 minutes at 1,000 ppm, for 30 minutes at 100 ppm., and for 40 minutes at 30 ppm.
These trials provide evidence that ozone is extremely effective in deactivating the coronavirus even when used at low concentrations.
The researchers also highlighted that the advantage offered by ozone over liquid disinfectants consists in the fact that, thanks to its nature as a gas, it is able to penetrate all environments, sanitizing contaminated surfaces.
Due to its gaseous form, ozone is able to disinfect all surfaces, even in the lateral, lower and internal parts, whereas liquid disinfectants are active only on the surface parts that they can reach directly.
In this regard, Dr. Ines Zucker of the School of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Tel Aviv and first author of the study, specified that “the advantage of ozone over common disinfectants (such as alcohol and bleach) depends on its ability to disinfect objects and the entire environment inside a room, and not just the exposed surfaces.”
Dr. Zucker also stressed that “ozone disinfects quickly and without danger to public health because gas can be produced relatively cheaply and easily from oxygen by electric discharge. For this reason, it should be possible to introduce industrial-scale ozone disinfection systems to combat the Covid-19 epidemic.”
The Israeli study constitutes further confirmation of what has already been demonstrated by the research group of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Nara in Japan, directed by prof. Toshikazu Yano of the Department of Infectious and Pathogenic Diseases, and by prof. Kei Kasahara of the Center for Infectious Diseases. The experiments of the Japanese scientists – repeated several times – have shown that ozone, spread in environments without the presence of people, is able to permanently deactivate and destroy Covid-19:
Even more interesting is the experiment conducted, also in Japan, by medical researchers from Fujita Health University (Toyoake, Aichi prefecture), according to which ozone is able to deactivate the coronavirus in environments even if spread in low concentrations.
Following this discovery, Fujita Medical University Hospital has installed ozone generators to eliminate Covid in waiting rooms and in patient recovery rooms:
In this context, the Department of Molecular Medicine of the University of Padua, directed by prof. Andrea Crisanti, with Dr. Claudia Del Vecchio as scientific director, conducted an experiment in the Level 3 Biosafety Laboratory. The environment was contaminated with a viral suspension of SARS-CoV-2, after which an ozone producing device of the type used for sanitizing environments. In the end, as reported by the “Virucidal efficacy report”, ozone was able to break down Covid with an effectiveness of 99.98 percent:
At the beginning of the pandemic, health authorities, while recognizing the virucidal qualities of ozone, remained hesitant, arguing that there was a lack of specific studies capable of confirming the effectiveness of ozone against Covid-19.
But now – after four university centers around the world have demonstrated how effective, safe and economical is the use of ozone for the sanitization of hospitals, waiting rooms, clinics, schools, means of transport, bars, restaurants, theaters and the like, there appears good reason to aggressively use ozone to interrupt the chain of spread of the virus.
