Metabolic flexibility (MetF) enables us to quickly switch back and forth between bodily processes depending on the availability of nutrients. This ability allows us to store energy when food availability is high, and use that energy when food availability is low. It affects women at a greater rate than men, possibly due to women’s low levels of androgens (i.e., testosterone), which protect against and treat autoimmune disorders. Often, cases of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis eventually progress to hypothyroidism.

Copper and estrogen exist in the body in a direct relationship. When estrogen increases, copper increases as well. Ceruloplasmin, the protein that binds to copper, should also increase with these levels, but its efficiency can decline over time. When ceruloplasmin is not functioning efficiently, it does not pick up free radicals in the body. Those free radicals are allowed to roam around and can cause oxidative stress, and then diseases can develop.
