Not available yet, these new lab tests could be a breakthrough in determining a prognosis for effective treatment. Educate yourself to spread the word.

There are three new tests 27-hydroxycholesterol, CYP27A1, and CYP7B1 that will hopefully be made available soon.

The first is 27-HC, 27-hydroxycholesterol. It is a cholesterol metabolite and was recently determined to act as a selective estrogen receptor modulator stimulating the ER+ breast cancer cells to grow. The chemical stimulates growth in petri dishes and mice, but there is strong reason to believe that it influences human breast cells. Women with cancer had significantly higher levels of 27-HC, about three times the amount in the breast tissue. The conversion of cholesterol could provide the link to conditions such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, cholesterol and estrogen-sensitive cancers.

The enzyme CYP27A1 was found in higher levels in patients with more aggressive tumors. This enzyme converts cholesterol into 27-HC. Alternatively, the enzyme CYP7B1 breaks down the 27-HC. Patients with low levels of CYP7B1 did not survive as long as those with higher levels.

These enzymes could provide new targets for treatments by lowering CYP27A1 and increasing the level of CYP7B1. Chemical blocking CYP27A1 could also slow down tumor growth.

The way that 27-HC provides stimulation in growth of the cells it could provide physicians with a new biomarker to track the progress of the cancer's growth.

Statins also lower 27-HC levels and could alter or impede breast cancer cells. This creates a number of links between statins and an improvement in breast cancer outcomes. Even a 15% lower risk of death in a large study that tested its use on cancer patients. Normally, I am opposed to statins, but this may require a different look.

High cholesterol levels could provide a clear link to breast cancer especially in post menopausal women.

At Second Nature Care, we use safe and effective Ozone therapies with patients who have cancer because ozone improves oxygen utiltization. Cancer does not grow in oxygen rich environments.
