Colonoscopy prep has always been horrible and it's about to get interesting.
A new small pilot study showed that meals infused with the laxative agent PEG-3350, sorbitol and ascorbic acid showed good-to-excellent bowel cleansing when eaten the day before colonoscopy. The study comes out of Dartmouth-Hitchcock center in New Hampshire. Doctors involved with the study founded Colonary Concepts to commercialize their research.
It is called an "edible colon preparation". The old standard was fasting and drinking 2-4 liters of liquid laxative which was associated with permanent renal tubule damage in the kidneys. The new method is meant to create better compliance and incorporate foods that are quickly evacuated from the G.I. tract.
I like to keep my colon cleansing action separate from my enjoyment of eating food unless I'm eating a raw green papaya salad from The Vietnam Restaurant. Green papaya is delicious and is a natural colon cleanser.
