Ear aches start in the gut. In children this manifests first as esophageal reflux. Reflux is the first sign and closely connected to your child's inflammation in his or her middle ear. Reflux and leaky gut drive middle ear disease in children.
Naturopaths know this and are trained in medical school with this information. Inflammation in the gut causes fluid to build up in the middle ear. Your child might describe it as clicking, sloshing or they can feel the fluid shift or bulge in their ear. It might seem like they're underwater.
Excess fluid can also attract pathogens that cause middle ear infections.
A new study followed 129 children getting inner ear tube replacements for otitis media. Out of 199 ear samples, (we have two ears), 82 samples for 64 children were positive for pepsin A.
Pepsin A is not associated with middle ear infections, but Interleukin 8 is significantly associated with both pepsin A levels and bacterial infections. Pepsin A and Interleukin 8 levels correlated to the need for a second or third tube replacement, six to 12 months after the first.
