The Never List
It was a dreary day in early January when my sister drove me to the Second Nature Care office for the first time. Since the previous February, I had become increasingly ill, and, just two days prior, was in the emergency room for symptoms mirroring a heart attack. It had been a long year of many doctor visits, tons of co pays, weeks of missed work and absolutely no answers. By the time I met Dr. Guggenheim, I had given up hope on a correct diagnosis; the notion of health and recovery had become the forgotten stranger of some past life. Then the strangest thing happened: Dr. Guggenheim actually helped me recover!
It has been about nine months since my first visit and my health has drastically improved. During my recovery, I have learned how common environmental toxins are and how devastating they can be to one’s health. I read about the toxins in our air, water supply, food, food containers, and homes. Dr. Guggenheim introduced me to the Environmental Working Group and I used their Skin Deep Database to differentiate the skincare and cosmetic brands that were safer from the ones that were made with harmful ingredients. And it was at that moment that I truly found Beautycounter.
I had been a Beautycounter customer for a while, but never really understood their mission until I learned how harmful, and common, toxins are in our world. Beautycounter was founded by Gregg Renfrew with the sole purpose of getting safer products into the hands of everyone. Renfrew learned that the cosmetics industry is virtually unregulated in the United States. For example, the European Union bans or restricts about 1,400 harmful ingredients from personal care products, but the Unites States only bans 30. Furthermore, the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of personal care products since 1938. This seventy-nine year old law does not grant the FDA the power to obtain safety data or issue recalls on cosmetics found to be unsafe. Armed with this knowledge, Beautycounter voluntarily holds itself to a higher standard by constantly screening, learning and sharing their ingredients. Beautycounter’s Never List bans over 1,500 harmful ingredients from their products, and Beautycounter promises to never compromise product safety or product performance.
I was just coming off of disability and had absolutely no sales experience, but I knew that I wanted to be a part of Beautycounter’s movement. While my recovery was going strong, I didn’t want to go back to a 12-hour work day. I wanted to find a career that I could work from home, so I could rest on days that my body needed to rest and go to my doctor appointments without being docked of pay. Beautycounter was the answer. I am now working for a company whose mission I wholeheartedly support and which allows me to work from home, making my own goals and setting my own schedule. I was nervous that I
didn’t have the skills necessary to succeed, but Beautycounter is a mission-driven, education-first company. Beautycounter simply wants genuine people who truly believe in our mission because their training program can teach all the other skills. I have learned so much in my few short months with this company, and am so grateful that I get to share such an amazing mission with others.
