Copper is pretty cool.
In a blog a few months ago we discussed how copper prevents the growth of the MRSA virus by actually killing it. Bacteria die on copper surfaces due to an attack from the copper ions and oxygen species found in copper. Maybe we should be making our bathtubs and bathroom fixtures out of copper.
We like copper. On top of coordinating the death of MRSA it also may be an essential part of our health in small amounts.
Copper also plays a role in metabolism. It helps to move fat out of fat cells, called adipocytes, and into the blood stream for use as energy. If the body does not receive enough copper, fat builds up in fat cells and it is not utilized. It is literally a signal that turns in fat cells. The understanding of this mechanism could lead to a large contribution in treating obesity and diabetes.
