A specific mouth bacteria may increase the risk for pancreatic cancer, and possibly enable advanced treatment. A recent study reveals that a specific change in the microbial mix of the mouth (the oral microbiome) can represent a new risk factor for pancreatic cancer. The risk also comes along with old age, male gender, smoking, African-American race and family history.

The research found that men and women whose oral microbiomes contained Porphyromonas gingivalis had a 59% greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who did not. This is a very high number.

Also, those containing Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were 50% more likely as well at developing the cancer. These bacteria have been tied to diseases that cause inflammation of the gums.

The bacteria could potentially allow doctors to know who is at high risk for developing pancreatic cancer, which would lead to early prevention measures and/or earlier detection. Doctors would be given a huge warning sign.

Cigarette smoking is linked to major changes in the oral microbiome although these are reversable; it is unclear if there is a causal relationship between smoking-related changes and the alteration of immune system or cancer triggering activities in the pancreas.
