Reduce your risk of colorectal cancer with fruits and vegetables. Second Nature Care.

A vegetarian diet reduces your risk for colorectal cancer.  Find out about the latest study.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.  Go Green with a vegetable juice today.

It's no surprise that a vegetarian diet reduces the risk of several cancers. I've known about this since my early twenties when I regularly ate at a Seventh-Day Adventist cafe in Chicago. I could never figure out how they made sour cream out of cashews. It was beyond delicious.

Seventh-Day Adventists, who are typically vegetarian, had a 22% lower risk for all colorectal cancers compared to those who ate meat.

Novel Finding: What was most interesting was the fact that pescovegetarians who ate no meat, but consumed fish more than once a month had the lowest risk out of other nonvegetarian categories.

96,000 Seventh-Day Adventists have been widely studied in a prospective cohort trial between Jan. 2002 through Dec. 2007 for their diet, longevity and reduced risk for diseases.

Seventh-Day Adventists adhere to kosher laws and abstain from shellfish, pork, tobacco, illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages. Some avoid coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated beverages.

The findings:

Vegetarians were older than nonvegetarians, had higher education levels, exercised more and used calcium supplements.

Vegetarians were less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, use aspirin or statins, have been treated for diabetes, have a history of peptic ulcers and have a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.

Vegetarians were leaner, had lower BMI and less intake of total fat, saturated fat and had higher intake of fiber.

Vegetarians had a 19% lower risk for colon cancer and a 29% lower risk for rectal cancer.

Vegetarian diets were associated with a lower overall risk for colorectal cancer, a 19% lower risk for colon cancer, and a 29% lower risk for rectal cancer.

Researchers suggested that you need to stick to this dietary pattern for 2 decades in order to benefit from a reduced risk of cancer.
