An early onset of menses, body odor and pubic hair before the age of 8. Sometimes this comes with breast development. The medical field is responding with a non-plusse attitude and considers these symptoms as benign variants of pubertal development that do not require additional testing unlike in true central precocious puberty or CPP.
They do feel that early puberty in boys with penile and testicular enlargement are more concerning. Boys will more likely have central nervous system findings than girls with precocious puberty.
What pediatricians are missing is that this trend is not normal and is linked to multiple chemical exposures in utero and out. Early menses, breast and pubic hair development is also associated with obesity. Race/ethnicity and increased body mass index are two more factors. If your child needs a full evaluation of bone age interpretation or advanced lab testing then we refer to a pediatric endocrinologist.
I think they have adopted the "not so concerned" attitude because the trend is so prevalent and they don't know what to do to reverse the process. Early puberty has become the norm.
